Re: Windows blacked out

My rear side windows are from 2005-6. Just made a new passenger widow a few weeks back when it decided to take a walk. Found out when I got to camp. I think CellularSteve stole it Anyway we cut some new ones knowing good and well they shrink. They do get rough around the edges if ya don't use the tape.

So I'm not the only person that thinks they shrink?

Re: Windows blacked out

It's either that or my windows are growing.

Re: Windows blacked out

I always blame shrinkage on cold water.

In my experience covering windows from outside makes biggest difference when trying to keep van cool on a sunny day. Once solar energy goes through glass, it's hard to keep it from moving to inside of van unless the insulating panel is air tight. And if air tight the glass can get very hot. So much so I was concerned it would damage the adhesive used to secure glass to van body. Don't really know what temperature rating it has. Glass expansion also concerned me a little.

We have been using similar insulation cut out of 1/4 inch thick foam panels on door glass for over 5 years, and while they work great for hot and cold, it's outside curtains that reduce air conditioning load drastically when sun is shinning directly on glass. We made them out of white vinyl to match windshield and hang then off rain gutter. They are same color as van so they don't look too bad.

I agree with previous comment that outside curtains are a pain when trying to look outside. That's why we only use outside curtains to block direct sun when absolutely needed. Since we have an extended window van, I often leave some of the smaller outside curtains off so we can see out when needed.

Re: Windows blacked out

So where do you guys store them when not in use? Do you roll them up or fold them and stow them in the seats or stash them in the door pockets? I've been thinking of different ways to do this and looks like I'll be going this route.
Thanks

Re: Windows blacked out

At first they all went on the penthouse bed. However the window behind the driver is not needed on the road so I now leave that one in and put the front window one behind the guacho along this window. The rest stand up behind the closet.

Re: Windows blacked out

My door covers are in the seat pouch except the driver which is just tucked behind the seat. Because I always cover up while parked at home I want easy access to em. The others are always in place...yeah it looks a bit crude.

Re: Windows blacked out

They're slippery suckers. Wherever I put mine they slide out when I'm on rough roads. I suggest standing them up somewhere instead of storing flat because they won't stay there.
