Last week I ordered a set of these, and within a few days they arrived on my door step. Packaging was excellent, I suspect it ate into the profit a bit. They appear to be well made, but a couple observations. First there is a bit of flash (thin strips of plastic) in the hand holds from the molding process that can result in small paper like cuts if not sanded down, but it took about five minutes to cure this. Secondly, I mounted mine flat on the roof, which will allow the groves to fill with water. A couple drain holes are the answer. Both are really easy fixes on what looks like a well made product. The way I mounted them doesn't really allow for quick access though. I figure since I now have them, I'll never need them, but having an option besides digging a hole for the spare is great. Roof mount --- very cool.

I'd started to think that was one of the most ideal spots to mount these too --- but then started wondering about whether or not long-term UV exposure would be good/bad for the plastic these are made out of. Not sure about most people's usual parking locations for their vans, but mine gets direct sun all day long. Long-term, day in/day out SoCal sun exposure is pretty brutal for almost everything, it seems.

Does anybody know ---
--- whether or not these traction boards ought to be kept indoors/out of direct sun (apart from when you are journeying somewhere?) To minimize long-term UV effects on the plastic? I'm totally OK with the plastic slowly "hazing" or getting more gray over time....cosmetic changes are fine....but I'd like to know that the steady UV doesn't slowly break down the plastic's strength/integrity.

(arctictraveler, your traction boards are nicely shaded by your solar panels! Seems like great spot.)

Mountain Bike Roamer, you might want to check out Protectant 303 or simliar, which is basically sunscreen for anything besides your skin. The manufacturer of my plastic canoe recommends it for canoes stored outdoors.

These are UV resistant, that being said anything in prolonged sun and heat will and can break down over time. I kept mine mounted on the top of my van for over 6 months. They still look new other than normal wear and tear from testing and flexing the hell out of them… mounting them on the side, back or spare tire will help with prolonged direct sun light. Guess I should make a sun screen bag with a lock ring (to be lock on top) to protected form the sun for those that want to have them on top. I'll get on it…
