Greetings SMB Forum

Sort of a retired backpacker looking for an alternative to get to back country. I have been aware of SMB for several years and lurking in the back ground. have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments and posts. My screen name is Gilalobo, pronounced He-lah, as in Gila Wilderness. Have sectioned hike PCT, CDT, and AT, plus hundreds of miles elsewhere like Big Bend area, RMNP. Just getting old and wearing body parts out, thus, my looking. Currently reside in Houston after 20 years living in El Paso and miss the big empty as I call it. Not sure if I'll be new or used, or build out. Anyway, just wanted to say hello.

Welcome, we have lots of good info here. I was in a similar situation a few years back and the purchase of my SMB was the best move I've made. I didn't think I'd care much for off roading but it has got me to so many great places I'm glad I made the move. Although sleeping in a tent provides a unique experience, kicking back in a heated van while it's snowing out is sure nice.

Good luck on your search.

This is a good thread worth a read:

Hi Gila,

Welcome to the forums. Lots to learn here. Maybe buy a used van and throw a matress in it, and a locker under it. Use your camping gear and get out and away from the concrete. As you explore you can decide better on what you’ll need, be it new, used or built out.

These "get outa town" vans are addictive aren't they? Welcome - You can certainly get a lot of ideas here, just start sifting through the treads, or just as the group.
We've had great experiences in Big Bend. well, all but the Javelina's - they're simply deplorable creatures.

Watch out for the frig in non SMBs. Many RVs have 3wsy (AC/DC/propane) which are heat exchange not compressor AND must be level which for backcountry means an ice chest. We started out like you and found out the hard way! Great to wake up in rainstorm dry in morning but rarely could get level enough for frig. OK for weekend or short trip like normal weekends while working and only out a few dats. Ice chests get old. Might as well stay in motels and drive to trailheads. Portable compressor electrics can work, but battery capacity becomes an issue.
