The right van? and Resources

Hello all, thanks very much for having me. I'm a little better than an amateur... but love vans... my first was a 62 econo.

Now I have a 96 E150 with the 5.8 and considering a build out to 4x4. I understand from a quick scan of the site that larger motors might be preferable, but this this what I have... for now.

My immediate dilemma is the current trans... which appears to need a rebuild at 100K original miles.

So here's my questions w/ bullet points:

1. is the E150 with the 5.8 sturdy enough to go 4x4?
2. Is the transmission from a 96 E150 comparable with a future transfer case?
3. Is there a comprehensive list of options (along with required parts) I could browse?
