I've seen more Ford truck transmissions fail from underuse than from overuse. Underuse (lots of short trips, flat-land driving, no towing) may never get it warm enough to cook off the moisture, which causes premature wear in friction parts from corrosion, and can foul up valve bodies.

If you are not towing they are great engines with better fuel economy.
The Coachman I have has a 5.4L and it really impressed me on the way home from Denver, even at altitude and on those climbs - can't say my V10 would have been much better.
I'm really interested in this van - but I am in Baja and it is in Texas...

If you have a fully built out SMB, that's still a lot of weight to tow about. If you leave it as a passenger van, sure.

The Coachman is as heavy as any SMB. The 5.4L moves it along just great. It got 13.2 mpg pushing 75 mph for 1000 miles from Denver.
Conversion to 4X4 is just about done including 4.10 regear and 285's.
This JayCo we did was a little lighter but had 3.73's with the same tires and drove great with the 5.4L.
I understand the need for a V10 or Diesel, but I think these 5.4L are not to be overlooked.

Our 98 E250 SMB 2WD has the 5.4 with 3.73 rear. On our cross country trip we averaged 14.9 mpg over 8,300 miles, about evenly split between 70mph highway and single lane mountain road driving. I'm sure we would have done better at 60mph on the highways if we had slowed down. Never did I feel like we didn't have enough power to do what we wanted to.
