hmmm.. "limp mode" I wonder if this is what our SMB did only on our second day of owner ship?

The PO said that when the light goes on, you have about 10 gallons left. So i figured about 100 miles. Well it seemed to start limping long before it was low.. but i thought maybe i wasn't paying attention.. and it was now running out of gas. I quickly made it to the gas station and put $50 in it.. and all was well.

So this means it's going to "limp" everytime i get on my last 10 gallons? Thats ridiculous.

Has this limp mode happened to anyone else??

I've put up to 39 gallons in the 46 gallon tank with no change in performance. The Low Fuel warning has come on several times before that fillup, but it ran the same as usual.

The only time my van went into limp mode was when the engine was overheating. The factory gauge went way up towards the HOT side and the power went away - it would only idle. I poured a gallon of water on the radiator, temp went down and the power came back.

We have put as much as 41.3 gallons into the tank, and there was no change in performance before the fillup.

I have successfully been able to put 41.7 gallons into my tank without experiencing the limp mode ? I am also able to fill my tank completely to the top of the fill spout by using the fill techniques that I posted earlier . I am going to measure the tank accurately and see what I find out .

When I fill my tank, not even to the filler tube, it leaks fuel slowly until it drips off the bottom of the tank. I never fully fill up before parking it at home, only when I'm about to take a trip.

Jeffery , I have never lost a drop either on the fill up for a trip or the weekly fill up , it is 4.6 miles from the station that I most commonly utilize to my home.

I sure hope you have a diesel van. Leaking gasoline would scare me.

At the least, when the drops stop you are still venting fumes to the air. Either it is adding to air pollution, or it is a potential ignition site.

In either case, it shouldn't happen and you should get it fixed before something bad happens.

Only do this with Diesel , Gasoline has a proportionally higher expansion ratio and is much more volatile/flash point .

I've added 43 gallons with no limp mode. Only problem was the fuel bill....

When the fuel light comes on, I am consistently able to fill up the tank at high speed to 36 gallons before the pump automatically shuts off. I've put in an additional 4 gallons without any problems. However, I've never tried beyond that, takes too much time, especially considering how long I've already spent at the pump getting to 36 gallons.
