6.0L diesel loud fan

Greetings,

Sometimes when I've been going up hill for a while and the engine temp gets hot (EOT ~230) I hear a super loud screaming fan start and typically run for a few minutes and then turn off as the temp drops. The first time I heard it, it was pretty disconcerting.

I'm wondering exactly what fan that is and where it is located and if that's a normal howling when it's on. Is it the engine or tranny fan? (I didn't track the tranny temp) Are quieter one's available?

Thanks,

Dave

Ha Ha! I just went through the Teton Pass as well when it howled for a longer time than normal. I have a ScanGauge that I programmed to show both ECT and EOT to make sure the heat exchanger isn't getting clogged up.

Do you know where that fan is located?

That’s good!

When you don’t hear the fan roar under similar conditions…. Get your AAA card ready…

Apologize about deleting my original post.. but yeah, as far as I know this is the main cooling fan that does potentially have issues with the fan clutch

Sounds normal to me. With EOT at 230, still within normal range, the fan clutch is probably fully engaged which is jet loud above 2500 RPM.
Nothing says, "yes, I have a 6.0, in a van" more than scaring children with your fan.

I'm thinking there is a new discussion/debate on hood louvers on the horizon.

I had mine come on climbing Wolf Creek Pass one day just before overtaking a cyclist peddling up the same road. He thought I had done something intentional to mess with him and he turned around to flip me off. It's not like I was rolling coal or anything. Just a really loud fan working as designed on the 6.0L diesel.

I love it when that fan kicks in.

6.0 diesel loud fan

I am presumed the loud fan was my turbo. Now that the weather has changed it occurs more often. Is my presumption correct?
