Re: A couple questions before I write the check.

I guess my question is, why wouldn't you go EB?

I guess the snow in Jage's yard is giving him far too much indoor-time on his hands.

Re: A couple questions before I write the check.

Having come from a syncro westy, thoguht id give my 2cents also-
we too have a family of four, sold the syncro westy and eventually bought an eb 50 quigley. the smb is a vast improvement in nearly every way, and ours is a nicely maintianed 2000, so not super new either. i do like the eb, but its not a daily driver for us. i think that as you have mentioned, an rb smb will feel huge inside compared to your westy, either will be great. we have the v10 and i was a die hard diesel fan...have to admit the v10 has been really good. i would be stoked will a newer 6.0, but was just suprised how much i like our v10.
coming from the westy with two kids, any smb you chose, youll be loving it- it goes faster, stops better, a/c that actually works, better reliability, less maintainance, less finicky, more room and storage, more capable, a fridge that actually works, and more shoulder belts for kids, more upgradeable, etc....
the smb is quieter than the westy for sure as well.
have fun,
j

Hey jage,
Thats some funny stuff there, I love it.
The only few reasons that I would not go with the EB is we are gonna be using this as a semi-daily driver. So maybe the RB will be better for that. The EB off roading aspect does not worry me to bad, be smart and choose good lines and you would most likely be ok for most trails. How does the EB compare to parking and city driving vs the RB. The only other real reason that the RB is on the top of the list is that in just a couple of weeks I have to make a decision on one that is coming up for sale. 06 diesel RB-50 I know I can always pass on it and wait for something else, but this van does have most everything else on my wish list for an SMB. So it comes down to that time of what I can live with and with out on my new SMB.
Thanks jage.

Re: A couple questions before I write the check.

An EB and RB will drive the same around town, since they have the same wheelbase.

But.... my van is a little long for some parking spots, and way too long for angled on-street parking. An RB would be more reasonable when parking. But without the rear cargo box and tire, an EB is only a little longer than an Excursion. An RB with rear carrier and tire would be about the same as an Excursion. Without the rear mounted gadgets, the EB is only a little longer than an Expedition, so it is more parking friendly than an EB with rear cargo/tire.

I'd say there is almost no difference. First off your wheelbase is the same on a Ford platform. This means that swinging into a parking space is the same experience (unlike my F250 which has a longer wheelbase and is impossible to park, despite being the exact same length tip to tail).

Second, the rear is equally obscured on both of them, so you can see nothing. If you're lucky enough to find that one-in-one hundred parallel spot that will fit an RB and not and EB, then you're going to need a backup camera and some skill anyway, so it's pretty much moot.

The only real difference is probably in how much you hang out of a spot- our F250 is often feet into the parking lot, as they make the spots short here in denver. The RB would be a foot longer not feet longer... hardly a distinction.

I was dead set on the RB platform, for offroad clearance, but wound up buying an EB. I personally could never go back, but for you if there is no reason not to do an RB platform either than don't worry about it. But if it's not a sticking point for you one way or the other, don't make it a deal breaker either way.

I was told that this is what Low Range is for.

btw towing is another thing people fret about with the EB. With my old EB V10 cargo van, I towed a 16ft car trailer and car all over the place, no issues.

...Plus 1 - I tow an 10K 29' trailer with my EB with no problem other than the awful tires that are now sold for most trailer sizes. Hitch weight is 1220 lbs loaded and 1200 empty.
