I can sympathize with the going out in the wrong footwear for a confrontation. Barefoot in wet grass didn't work out so well.

I assume you don't have any security cameras?
Just remember that you were threatened and scared before you laid your hands on the thieves. You don't want to be on the wrong end of a lawsuit. I've seen more ridiculous things happen.

Man, I’m scared to drive my van out west this summer! Don’t want my cat hacked off while we are sleeping [emoji15] I don’t get how all these places get away with buying piles of cats no questions asked.

Agreed ^^^
I think you'll be fine if you aren't parking on the street in cities. Can happen anywhere though, and it does happen anywhere. Happened to my Mom's Toyota truck while she was in an Olive Garden having lunch in a decent part of town.

Since this thread is titled "protect my catalytic converter"...
Let's come up with some innovative solutions......
...spring steel 3/4" wide strips riveted across converter areas....really difficult to sawsall....esp when loose flappy.
....bike cable lock (without plastic) wrapped around converter/exhaust...
.......weld/bolt steel plate across frame members.......
......weld rebar longitudinally down exhaust in a couple of places.......
.......chicken wire across bottom of chassis.....mulitple layers........floppy
Since this is brainstorming no idea too dumb......

.....I jumped right into solutions above without a defined problem...
If we apply engineering rigor to the problem above we first need to define the problem.
Here's a first crack at defining the problem: "thieves are stealing catalytic converters left and right!!!".......that's a bit broad to start ideating solutions to our vans....short of calling your senator and asking that cat recycling should be outlawed or something.
"Thieves are using reciprocating saws to steal converters in seconds or minutes"............better....now we have two areas to attack......defeating a sawsall or making the theft take so long that they wont bother.

Boywonder, I like the way you think.
Howbout a huge skid plate underneath the whole area, carefully cut around the things that hang lower, with ventilation holes here and there to manage heat? Skid plate could be hung with non standard/theft proof fasteners.
