I have PIAA fog lights on my work truck and they blind me in fog but work OK as a driving light. The stock Hella fog lights work great for what they are intended for, fog. Sounds like you want a driving light. IMO I would look for some kind of LED that you can dim so you they can be used in both worlds if they even make such a thing. The pattern does apply as well and how they point. To tell the truth I'm tired of being blinded by drivers adding bright lights and using them when they're not needed. I'm looking at adding some bright lights to the bumper other than the fog light cutout so I can counteract other drivers. At least I'll be able to see the road.

We are just looking for a fog light. I agree with being blinded by the lights of others when driving when there is no fog. Very irritating. Might just stick with the stock Hella fog lights. We are going to add a light bar eventually.
IMO the main issue with the Aluminess bumpers fog lights are the cutouts are too high in the air (on my lifted vehicle) and are better suited for driving lights. The Hella fogs are dim and have a downward pattern that is useless as a driving light but don't blind me while driving in nighttime fog. During the day they can hardly make a difference other than helping other drivers see you. I've seen some high tech fogs out there that are probably better than the Hella's but can't comment on how well they work during foggy night driving. You almost need to mount the brighter fogs on the bottom of the bumper, then point them down and out. I really don't want to do that. Putco makes some interesting 3-LED fog/driving lights but I'll bet they're too bright for evening fog... just don't know. YMMV
