Another bike rack option

Check these out: http://kuatracks.com/products/bike/. They look nice at least.

Re: Another bike rack option

They really are. I have the Sherpa on my VW Golf. It's aluminum and well made. I like it because not only does it hold the bikes firmly for a hitch rack (little or no fore-aft sway) but it's also very light (~25lb) so it's easy to take on and off.

If I was to buy another hitch rack I'd look hard at the NV. It has a few more bells and whistles like an integrated bike stand for wrenching.

Re: Another bike rack option

These rack are great. My friend has the NV 4 bike and it is rock solid. Very well made and designed. Even has an attachment to hold your bike so you can work on it. The only scary part is the price...

Re: Another bike rack option

Actually they're not a whole lot more expensive than the more inferior (and heavier) Yak and Thule hitch options. My Yak Holdup is rusted and sags to one side. The quality is lacking.

Re: Another bike rack option

Glad to hear your experience, Joe, esp. given how much you ride. My Yak is not stable and the NV is tempting.

Does anyone know if the Sherpa (with a bike on) would clear an Aluminess bumper with the generator box on?

I can check for fit but I'm guessing with the box it's going to need a hitch extender.

Re: Another bike rack option

regarding rear of van bike carriers - has any body got a good way to keep the dirt and grit off the bike chain and axles while in transport? Other than those fully enclosed hard shell pods - is there some sort of protection available besides a blue tarp and a a lot of bungey cords?

Re: Another bike rack option

I had a guy that makes road covers for boats sew up this cover for me. There are two road bikes in there with the wheels removed. I keep the wheels in wheel bags inside the van. The road cover was around $150 and the wheel bags were about $20 each from Performance Bicycle. The road cover has eyelets in the bottom and a draw string at the bottom also

I checked for fit using the Blue Ox 8" hitch extender that I used for my Yakima Holdup before I added the Aluminess bumper and box. It doesn't quite make it. You'd need a 10 or 12" extender to clear the box.

I'll add that I hated dancing around the rack to access the rear which is why I spent a small fortune to add the bumper to my rig. It's much nicer carrying bikes on the swingarm. I like the fact that they're higher up off the road and get less dirty as well. And it's easier to parallel park
