Another Progressive Issue

Our Sportsmobile is <ehem> a bit more senior than many (1985). I signed up for an RV policy with Progressive, our usual carrier for our cars.

Received a letter asking for more information. After a 1/2 hour phone call, they informed me they couldn't cover it.

When pressed on the issue, their rules require that RV insurance vehicles have an internal toilet (ours does not, though it has cooktop, fridge, ac/dc system, and sink).

They also will NOT insure it as a regular van, as it as the aformentioned items.

I'm assuming I'm not the only one without a toilet? Or are they ALL equipped with such nowadays, and nobody else has this problem?

Most SMB's don't have a fixed head and black water tank that many insurance companies require. Usually they will not accept a porta potti as a fixed toilet either. I've received different answers from agents within the same office. It's a gray area but many members claim they have worked through the red tape and have got their vans covered. I have GMAC and they claim I'm covered. Do I know for sure that I will be covered if totaled out?....Nope.

Re: Another Progressive Issue

I've heard vague references from insurance agents, not to mention DMV agents, about having 3 out of 4, or 4 out of 5, things to be classified as an RV. Do they correlate to each other, I doubt it. Could I find it in writing, not yet.

Items mentioend to me were something like:
stove
bed
toilet (never heard if it had to be fixed)
water supply
furnace

Re: Another Progressive Issue

They asked me if the SMB had all of those things. I said yes with porta potti. I was also quick to point out that the registration/ vehicle id comes back as a Motorhome. That was all they needed.

Re: Another Progressive Issue

My understanding, 2nd-hand through this board, is that Progressive's policy says "built in toilet" as opposed to "fixed". The problem I've had is that the agents and adjusters interprit what this says for themselves (with all their 22 years of experience). Their interpritation colors how they explain it, and I've actually had to say, "No, please go back and read the section." to clarify something that an agent was remembering incorrectly from another section.

Progressive is easy- too easy in my opinion. They shrug and say "Well x dollars is all we can give you for that because of y, you weren't actually covered."

Man I really need to go find new insurance!

Re: Another Progressive Issue

I just took out insurance on my new SMB (still being built) with Progressive online. When I specified the manufacturer, the website then had a list of SMB models such as EB10, which is mine. I simply clicked on the model number which was all the questions they had about how it was equipped. They should know that this model does not come with anything except a porta-potti, if that.

What difference should it be to them where one takes a crap?
