Battery

Just wondering if anyone has eliminated the dual battery set up on 7.3 diesels. I know Dakota has a 1000cca heated battery. I'd like to eliminate the engine compartment battery and go with the one under chassis. This would free up space for a turbo heat exchanger/intercooler. I have 640 ah house batteries and a rear mounted generator incase I need a jump.

Why not just mount the two Group 65s on the frame like the 6.0 vans?

Other than lengthening and properly sizing for the extra run, seems could be done w a bit of effort. A 6.0 battery harness would likely be a nice head start.

Single battery solution with the house batteries in support works.

If you always can plug in or never plan on being somewhere below 60 degrees you should be OK. Otherwise no way would I want to try to roll over a 7.3 on a single battery. Do the two batteries on the frame like the 6.0.

What is the cranking output of that dakota? Most BMS I have looked into have a surge capacity around 200-250A. That is too low for a 7.3 while the glow plugs are engaged, in my opinion.

Being a 7.3 owner for the past 17 years, I would only try to run one on a single battery in an emergency.

Do dual batteries on the frame and the 08+ front clip for room for an intercooler.

Wrestling a 1000 cca battery onto the frame rail is not something I would relish. My 250 ah battery is already more than I like to handle balanced on the jack pad and then connected to the terminals without seeing them. Then there is the inevitable corrosion and builds on the terminals that has to be cleaned and the battery has to come out to do that. Having the second chassis battery under there is a lesser but still difficult challenge with the same problems.

Le what?

Batteries are only 50ish lbs, 60 with the bracket. Use a trans jack or strong arm them, its not bad either way. Dont pull all the bolts out for the mounts, only one has to come out completely, the rest are slotted. Makes it super easy.

There should be covers installed over the batteries from the factory - couple that with some temrinal spray and you wont end up with corrosion.

100% worth it to have them out of the engine bay.

Amp Hours and Cold Cranking Amps are two different things.

Your 250aH battery is bigger and heavier than a group 65 SLA.

Just for clarity :

1000 CCA battery is not the same as 250AH battery. Is your 250AH battery an AGM?

Thanks I will mount the engine compone next to my frame battery. Just wondering about wiring now?
How far can I run the one 2/0 wire from both batteries to the starter?
Should the ground also run back to the block.
I know my 2nd battery Grounds near the battery on the frame. Is that sufficient??
