It appears to have been a very rough bear encounter. Of course a Polar Bear is not the same thing as a brown bear (Grizzly) and a brown bear is not the same thing as a "small" black bear.

This man ran into a Polar Bear and those bears will hunt a man as easily as a seal.
Good thing polar bears are way, way up north.

Sorry if the pictures are "graphic". But the polar bear is a very big animal compared to a man. Big teeth, big claws and big muscles. Good thing the guy had the right caliber rifle with him and close to his sleeping bag.

The article does not mention if the guy had a dog with him or not. I thought it was common practice in polar bear country to have a dog with you to give a warning (and wake you up) if a polar bear was near. I would think a dog would be of more value than wither your logging has "soft sides" or "hard sides".

Those Polar Bear injury photos have been shopped around the internet for several years now. If you research it you will also find the guy kept a bunch of meat right in the wall tent with him.

You mean besides on his own bones?

It sure seems most "You won't believe this..." pics and stories on the internet typically leave out the part about the person in question being stupid.

i was chatting with a coworker of mine who transferred from Alaska. he told me a story of a guide/pilot that shared a funny story.
He dropped off a customer at a dock with gear for a few days and would return to pick him up after the _hunt_. Pilot taxis away from dock, takes off, circles and sees the guy kicking and throwning his arms about on the ground. Pilot lands plane and taxis to dock, runs over and asks what the guy is doing.
...the fella tells him he thought that his _Bear Spray_ was to be applied like bug spray.
