Best places to camp?

Hey there,

I live in the Bay Area and we recently got our Sportsy.

Curious, are there any resources out there on great spots to camp for free that are nice, and not at actual camp sites?

I'm down to learn about great camp sites as well, but I just realized that camping just anywhere is not quite as easy as it sounds.

I'm interested in:

- spots around the coast between here and LA
- spots on the coast between here and Humboldt
- spots around the Sierra

Any tips would be great. Thanks!

Sure it is - you just have to get out of the city and off the main highways. Look at a map of Forest Service lands in Calif. That's YOUR land. You can camp just about anywhere you can find a flat spot.

Look at a map of BLM land in Utah and Nevada. That's your land too. Just open a stock gate and drive on in - close the gate behind you. Unless it's clearly posted as private, the rancher only has the right to run cattle on it. YOU own it. Enjoy.

And congrats on the new van.

I've been using this app to find campgrounds--works pretty well. No help for boondocking however.

Re: Best places to camp?

Free camping along the coast between Redwood City and Humboldt (county) is a challenge.
Marin County- none
Sonoma County - none
Mendocino County - none until you get North of Ft Bragg.
(There are some nice County and State Parks along the way though.)
If you head inland a little you can get into Mendocino and Six Rivers National Forrest where you can do free boondock camping.

A shameless post of my web site ...some good, some not what you're after.

One of these days I'll get all my posts reinstalled on this new site. Currently I'm moving them over but it takes time.

Re: Best places to camp?

Thanks guys.

Yes, I'm new. My husband's posted a bit, but it took me a while to create an account.

We just got a brand new conversion created out of our Ford E350 white 2005 V10.

We got a pop top, stove, solar panels, hot water, back shower, etc. It's amazing. We've only had it for about 6 weeks but we've been going out almost every single weekend.

I like the idea of the BLM land. We've ended up parking in driveways of friends houses mostly, and I'm excited to wake up in the wilderness for once.

Pics coming soon. Having camera issues.
