Boondock or stealth overnighting near SMB Fresno ?

I have to deliver the van to SMB Fresno next Monday morning for some major surgery.

Anybody know of a good place to lay over after I drive down Sunday? I'd like to stay out of town but close if possible.

I understand there's some rough neighborhoods in Fresno and I'd hate to wake up with the van on blocks and my wheels missing.

So what do you consider close...1/2 hour, hour??? Closer?

I take it that the van will be in the shop but you'll be looking for a place to crash with the van before and after the repair correct? If so it's gonna be triple digit weather more than likely anywhere close to Fresno.

I believe Millerton Lake will be the closest camping. About 45 min northeast of SMB. Very hot dry and dusty this time of year. Won't cool down over night. I've also stayed at a Wal Mart near SMB, not a great part of town, but ok. The overnight security guard came by to say hi before I went to bed. This time of year I would consider a motel because of the heat.

The Fresno fairgrounds have rv hookups for a quick, safe overnight stay.

Re: Boondock or stealth overnighting near SMB Fresno ?

I was in Fresno to have my electric PH installed a couple of years ago. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Here's a link: http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/us/en/f ... ex-_-fatja

Its close to SMB so someone there dropped me off and picked me up the next morning. The Holiday Inn was almost new at the time. It was clean but nothing special. It is situated alongside Hwy99 so you can see the morning commute. There are a few places nearby (within walking distance) to eat.

The area in and around the Holiday Inn isn't desolate. There's some activity going on as people come and go and also go out to eat.

Hope this helps™,

I lived in Fresno for about 5 years. As a general rule stay to the North East side of town and you should be OK.

Thanks for all the responses and advice. I've decided to try for one of the N side Wallmarts with the fairgrounds as plan B.
