Re: California smog on diesel?

I was at the CA DMV on Friday and asked. They said it was required on diesels over 6 years old.

Re: California smog on diesel?

No such thing as a clear, definitive answer from DMV, but this is from their website:

"Upon initial registration, nonresident, diesel powered vehicles manufactured in 1998 or after with a (GVWR) rating of no more than 14,000 lbs, and specially constructed vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. The six or less model years old rule does not apply to these vehicles. "

-- along with this --

"Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:
....
Diesel powered manufactured prior to 1998 or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs ..."

So, at least how I interpret this is that pretty much all non-commercial diesels manufactured after 1998 need to be smog tested.

This brought to you by CARB, the same agency that will require that low-e glass be installed on all cars beginning in 2012, so you use your AC less. Oh, and the same agency that wanted to ban black cars because they felt you would use your AC more in a black car. So I pay more taxes so this agency can increase the cost of a new vehicle.

That's why I asked on Friday when I registered for 2012. Mine is a '08, and they said not required until its 6 years old.

In looking for ways to reduce the registration cost (that keeps going up in this marvelous State)
I also asked if there was a way I could get the value reassessed, they laughed and said no. (We are stuck with the original value for as long as we owned it.) Then I asked about selling it to my son as a way of re-assessing it. They said that would not work, if it is sold to a family member the value stays the same.

Re: California smog on diesel?

The 6-year waiver on smog inspections only applies to gas engined vehicles. Why???? Only the CA DMV knows.

California smog on diesel?

Not if you haven't added anything they don't approve of or deleted something they require. As long as you aren't billowing black smoke, they literally don't care about the quality of the air exiting out your tailpipe.

Your California tax dollars and fees, hard at work...
