I'm going to be doing this repair on my van this weekend. I've got a few questions if one of you wouldn't mind:

1. I have the Dorman canister/ball mentioned multiple times above. My question is.....which direction do I want the inlet/outlet? In other words, should the outlet or inlet head through the firewall?

2. Just so we're clear, you're essentially just inserting the ball inline on the black vacuum line that comes through the firewall, however you decide to route everything. Is that right?

Thanks!

BB

The Dorman part along with every other vacuum reservoir (assuming they DO NOT have built-in check valves or something similar) doesn't matter what you make as "in" and "out" The check valve you should be using determines what comes from the intake and which goes to the factory control system.

For the most part that's correct. If you care to see another manner I've done this--using Ford factory parts instead--you're welcome to see this thread I posted in FTE's Tech Folder: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-controls.html That might be more than you want or need but 'tis offered none the less!

Direction?

Forgive my ignorance of vacuum systems.....

I have everything plumbed and am ready to hook up the Dorman reservoir/valve unit. My question is.....which nipples goes to which hose? One port has a shroud and the other doesn’t. Can anyone let me know which line goes to the shrouded nipple? The line through the firewall or the line into the dash controls?

I seem to be having this same issue in my 2011 E350. Just started last week while out in Eastern Oregon so I will have to tackle this project soon. Thanks to all of you for the detailed write ups. I'm wondering if the model year makes a difference on which cannister, Dorman round ball or stock Ford, will fit better under the dash or in the engine somewhere.

In the event those of you interested in this mod want to do it and don't want to bother finding parts, I offer the kit through Vantage Optics at the following link

No it's not rocket science but this setup works well and the install is very quick.

That's a great simple kit Scott. My understanding is that the bulb is not necessary on the 7.3 psd rigs... is this true or is this kit good for gas and diesel rigs both? Thanks

I believe Ford used the same reservoir on all variations...would make sense as the vacuum pump is a separate component altogether.

If I am incorrect please point it out as it's good info to know!
