Dented sidewall on spare?

Hello,
I have a BFG E Rated tire that was aggressively mounted to the Aluminess spare swing out. It has this big dent in the sidewall.
Dangerous? Blowout risk?
I'd hate to burn it—Never even driven on!
Thanks for any advice.

I would see if you could un mount it and see what the underside looks like. It's hard to see from the angle of the photo but how deep is the depression? If this is your only spare, I personally would replace it. Otherwise I would use it as my secondary spare tire but I'd be limping my van out if I was using this tire (getting to pavement ASAP, no highway speeds). I'd treat it like a donut.

Little difficult to decipher from the pic , but is the "dent" still in play since you've removed the tire (is the contrast just representative of a weathered area vs no exposure)? If the indentation still remains, I'd give the exact same advise as Cyrull.
***IMO the potential repercussions associated with a high speed blow-out are not something to gamble with - especially if its a heavy rig & lifted - Safety first!

I wish you would have posted this last week. I just put new tires on my van and threw away the 4 old ones that had about 40% tread left. I didn't want to deal with trying to sell them or anything. They were 265/75/16 though.

Thanks for the advice. I already had a blowout with the tires that came on the rig— granted they were c rated but still scared the shit outta me.
The dent is still there. I was hoping that E rated sidewall would hold up.

Grampswrx— bummer!

I’d take it to your tire shop to have them take a look, see what they say(hopefully they’ll be honest about it and not just try to sell you a new tire).
I don’t know, I think it should be fine, it’s not like the sidewall has been comprised by being scraped, chunked or sliced, it’s just indented and I bet if you left it un mounted for a bit or loosened up the mounting, it’s likely it would remedy itself to a point. (Rubber memory, or something like that). It would be the same as running on a tire that’s flat spotted after sitting in the garage for too long, no?
It does remind us all to check how tightly tire shops mount our spares on the swing out, I have to tell them not to over torque, and often have to back the lug nut off a bit because with my 315’s, if it’s too tightly mounted, the tire interferes with the latch and I can’t swing it open.
Post a follow up on what you find out from the shop

My ko2’s do this too. I 5 way rotate my tires, so it isn’t in one spot for more than a coupe of months. The dents only seem to last one drive cycle. Depending on how long you’ve had it mounted as the spare for price of mind if nothing else have it looked at by a tire guy you trust.
