Re: Doofas time. Any body else do this?
Posting kind of late on this thread, apologies, but just had to mention that one very important trick is to do a quick walk-around inspection of the vehicle prior to engine start.
I developed this habit after starting my plane with a powered tow bar still attached. Fortunately, it's a twin-engined plane so there was no prop strike involved. Double-fortunately somebody came by to let me know before beginning to taxi.

When I got back, we found that the plastic bag had blown off as I opened and shut the shop door, and about a tablespoon of windblown aluminum dust was floating around on top of the oil..%$%#@*&

But think how unhappy you might be if you **hadn't seen** that AL dust!

How about getting an SMB high-centered? Driving on a very unused road to a backcountry site late last night, tired, didn't notice I was in the rut, which got very deep very suddenly shortly before the van stopped moving. No shovel on board, either. Lo range & front wheels pulled us out. Whew!

Re: Doofas time. Any body else do this?
I was hoping I could go through life without posting on this thread but...
Locked my keys in the SMB with the engine running. Luckily I wasn't in the booneys and AAA was able to get to me within 30 minutes. Scary how easy it is to break into a Ford van. Now I know why Zeta has external locks on his doors...

Tapatio:
An hour or two ago I bought one of those external keyless keypads for fear of the very thing that happened to you.
But I gather it won't work with the engine running? So maybe I should just return the darn thing without installing it and get some kind of external key safe instead.

Re: Doofas time. Any body else do this?
The keypad works the same as your remote. Test it running with the remote first, if it works, so will the keypad.
I find the keypad very useful. I can't believe how many times I want in the van and the keys/remote are in the house. And I have a set of keys hidden in the van. If I ever lose my keys I can get in and get to my extra keyset. I won't post where the keys are hidden, but if we meet I will show you where they are.

Believe you are correct, that the remote keypad won't work with the engine running. I installed mine, out of sight, at the rear door and I found it very useful.
