DOT Approved Seating?

I tried to search the forums on this topic but was unsuccessful.

At the risk of asking a stupid question, can someone explain the significance of having (or not having) DOT approved seating?

I am planning my build and am not sure what to think.

Thanks in advance.

From what I've read, it's a pretty gray area and primarily one of insurance/liability issues as opposed to legal/regulatory issues. If you Google "DOT approved seating van conversion" you'll find a lot of info. Here's one thread that addresses some of the issues:

I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

DOT seats are only required if:

1) You are re-selling the van and need to claim FMVSS compliance for passenger vehicles
2) You are driving commercially and the van seats more than 9 passengers.

RV's do not require seating compliance. Most class A motorhome seats are nothing more than a Lazy-boy recliner lag-bolted to plywood, surrounded by shiny cardboard.

It's easy to install compliant seatbelts if they are separate from the seats. I personally would not install a seat with integrated seatbelts unless if were compliant, either aftermarket or a take-out from another vehicle.
