Econoline crash safety?...

I got to wondering how safe and econoline is/would be in a bad crash. I know this is a bad subject, but my folks were recently in a bad accident and their car saved their lives for sure. It got me thinking about how safe an econoline is in a head on or side impact...any thoughts or experiences?
I use my van to haul kids and road trips so it made me think about it. Anyway, although its a morbid subject and heaven forbid, I just was curious of any other smb'ers thoughts or experiences...

How are airbags affected by the off-road front bumpers? Will they still deploy in a collision?

And of course, all the mods change everything.. bumpers, new front suspension, lifts, front mounted winches, poptops, etc.

I just try not to hit anything bigger than me.

Yes, airbags are triggered by the deceleration, bumpers won't affect that.

In stock form, yes... but they are made non/less functional with some of the leaf spring conversions.

Bumpers shouldn't affect crumple zones, unless mounted to something other than the front frame tabs. But the planned and tested geometry would be changed, although I think that probably doesn't matter too much to the crumple zone.

My 2002 with a stock has them. One thing that I remember seeing in a post someplace is that some of the older bumper installations defeat the crumple zones by the way they are attached to the frame.

Van vs steel guardrail at 60 MPH, van wins. PS - outer dually tire makes a perfect guardrail post removal machine.

So I hear....

Also it plows through deer just as well as traffic cones.

Great question. Not morbid at all. With kids and all, I think it is prudent to at least ask questions. Some of the answers might be a little worrisome, though.

Not crash test data, but...
Passenger Van Safety | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Given that I might be in the market for a new van, I have considered alternatives with 2nd and 3rd row airbags and such. Wish more attention were paid to safety of these vehicles. Perhaps, in the future...
