I figured the outside light option would be nice for setting up camp late and it is. It seems too bright for overall camp ambience, so we purchased an amber lens from camping world. I was unable to find a dimmer bulb. OK ....no comments from you western SMB's Anyway the amber lens is nice but makes the rig look more like an ambulance.
We had our "porch" light positioned low, on the bottom curve of the body. This lights up the ground and keeps the light out of our eyes, and definitely helps with the atmosphere.
For working around the van in the dark, we have Hella work lights on the corners of the PHT, and one in the back. THis provides about as much light as we could need.

Ditto on the Hella Work lights. I also installed an amber lens and changed out the bulb with an LED light which is more ambient than the bulb in came in with IMO. Supposedly with the amber lens, the bugs are not as attracted to it, and we noticed it during a summer trip up in Yellowstone NP. We also keep the exterior light on all night, since we use an LED bulb, it draws very little power. Hope this helps.
