Exterior side storage compartments

Ok .. so I have searched online and here and cannot seem to find any information on the exterior storage compartments (usually right behind the drivers door) on the outside of the Ford vans. There is no listing on them with sportsmobile... I couldnt find anything anywhere. Does anyone have them and do they have a brand name/company for them. I would like to get some for my van.... Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the propane door?

Sportsmobile has a few different sizes. You would have to find a place to build a box for behind the door. Ask for the propane door.

Here is a larger one:

Re: Exterior side storage compartments

Never seen storage there. On most SMB's that space is used for something else, most often a propane tank or an air compressor.

There isn't much space there, you might be better off with bumper storage of items you don't want inside.

Re: Exterior side storage compartments

What are you planning on storing in the small space between the body and the frame rail? My guess is you will have to have a custom box made. Keeping the door water tight may be an issue. Most of the propane doors wouldn't have killer seals because they aren't designed to seal up the open space behing the door.

Ambulance makes usually put the house batteries there so they are easier to service than the passenger side (since you can't put a door where the door is)

I think it would be large enough for useful storage. But agree it may be easier to build storage elsewhere.

Re: Exterior side storage compartments

Nice, but kinda hangy-down for most of us, not just the 4x4ers. You lose a lot of clearance.

I do have some space under the floor level but above the plane of the bottom of the chassis. At one point I installed a sort of pannier-type bag in there for seldom used repair stuff, but ended up taking it out. Probably only 8" high or less, and didn't seem worth cutting through the body. But I still think maybe a nice place for some tools that I also want sort of hidden from prying eyes (and hands).

Re: Exterior side storage compartments

You might be able to find a source for the parts for a box like that by contacting the folks who build Roadtrek Class B Motorhomes. They usually have a box along the outside of the frame, behind the driver's door. It often contains the outdoor shower and controls, and the shore power cable on Roadtreks. I have a buddy who uses that outdoor shower to wash his motorcycle after muddy rides.

Here's a photo of the box on a Roadtrek, with the door open. I've often contemplated adding one to my van, because they are convenient and useful, and otherwise wasted space.

Wow, that's a lot of room! But doesn't Roadtrek modify the van body with fiberglass parts to create running boards and those storage cubbies?
