I have the same "old eye" problems with night vision. I tried some higher (100W) wattage halogen bulbs first, but they melted the connectors.
Last winter, I converted to Xenon bulbs. The Plug and Play kit didn't work, so I rewired the headlight circuit, tapping the main circuit board for a 12V supply, and using the OEM connector for the right side headlight to control 3 relays that turn on the bulbs and activate the magnet that moves the tube for high and low beam.

They throw A LOT more light, but required some reaiming to minimize irritating oncoming drivers.
