Front Mounted Spare Tire

Remember there are many ways to solve a problem...
An Extreme Outback Tire repair kit has more than just some plugs...it has big patches and you can easily add a few items to you can sew up a sidewall split.

When I did my Overland Training classes we broke the bead (use a hi-lift, drive on it, or tyre plyers) sewed and patched a 4in long sidewall tear, reseated the tire and filled it with air.

Once you have practiced bead breaking & reseating you might just want to take a spare tire (vs tire/wheel) and find somewhere easier to stow that.

Also I don't know the story behind your dual blow outs in Death Valley but if it was me I would look at all the possible factors like tire pressure, driving style, speed and see if any of those could be changed.

Of course the folks who travel the Outback have dual swingouts on many rigs since it is so far between towns/stations.

Anyway just tossing some thoughts in.

Good feed back...thanks to all except Phil!! I bought a used wheel and tire for $175. I'm going to finish the fab this week and do a test run. Worst case is I'll have to stow the tire elshwere if I see my temps go up. My dual flat event had everything to do with not paying attention (at that moment) and being aired down which allowed the tire to "pinch" against the rim. Had I been at highway pressure I would likely have bounced off the rock. Phil was a great help in the whole event...I will forever be in his debt and on his list of idiots.

Good point and just as true for a non selectable locker. The Jeep has a Powertrax No Slip in the rear and an air locker in the front so the smaller diameter tire can only be run on the unlocked front. A rear flat will make the extra tire change a fun night on the side of the road in the rain. I hope the spare on the front works out and since it's so easy to spend sombody elses money on the internet...........You could go to a bead lock wheel and just carry a spare tire without the rim on the front. That way the air will rush right thru the middle of the spare tire. Beadlocks make for easy self installation of tires because the side of the rim unbolts. You talking the off-road driving lights mounted on buckstop (front bumber I assume) caused temp to go up? Please clarify for me.

My Buckstop bumper has a beefy 2-bar grill guard. I mounted four 6" lights on the middle bar. This is in front of the OEM trans cooler. Apparently it interrupted the airflow enough to make the cooler much less effective.


The Tru-cool has a lot more area, so it's more likely to get smooth air in the first place, and it's so huge it'll work better even if its not getting smooth air.
