FYI - Aluminess rear bumper latches = Eberhard 241

Morning Everyone.

Wanted to offer a l'il tidbit to the forum. One of the latches on the rear Aluminess bumper was broken - the latch wouldn't auto reset after releasing from the striker pin. Contacted Aluminess, and they said $15 each + $10 shipping. I held off because the van was in the shop.

When I eventually removed the latches for cleaning, I saw "Eberhard" stamped into the side of the latch. Searching the interweb for "Eberhard" revealed a rather cool website - https://www.eberhard.com/ - that offers way more than latches.

Anyway, if anyone is searching for replacement latches, Eberhard makes a stainless version of the style that Aluminess provides - https://www.eberhard.com/details/rot...40-241-series:

8-241-SSR-22 - https://www.eberhard.com/products/ro...1-series/19655

8-241-SSL-22 - https://www.eberhard.com/products/ro...1-series/19654

Received the new latches last night, and they installed with no issues. Now the latches should work for another few years.

Good info. I actually need a knew striker for that latch. I don't see a match on the Eberhard site to what is on my Aluminess bumper. Did you find a source for those too?

I've had to replace several of these in the last few years. The issue seems to be that the spring that flips up the latch breaks. I carry spares now (there is a left and right hand one) but when the last one broke a few weeks back, I was unable to replace it because the bolt is seized in the threaded insert that is staked into the latch body. The insert has come loose and just spins when I turn the bolt. Getting it out without damaging the aluminum housing is going to be a real chore requiring grinding of the bolt head off, then drilling it out, unless someone has a better idea.

Our striker pins are in decent shape, so that's a negatory on searching for a replacement.
I'd contact Aluminess - info@aluminess.com

And arctic, I made sure to glob anti-sieze on all the threads the lock-nut doesn't touch.

These things take a beating through normal use, Keep them well lubed as well as the latch pin.

When building my back bumper I bought the Eberhard latches from their website. Nice product.

I thought only 5200 did that. I found it best to wear a hat when using it too, cuz it tends to jump into your hair.

I once accidentally left a bottle of anti-seize under the hood of my car, where the heat caused it to exude most of its contents onto the cylinder head. That was a unique smell. Now I know how surgeons who leave a sponge inside a patient feel.
