Re: Good thing I had both hands on the wheel !

Rob,

The system is simple. Compressor through check valve to tank to output. I disconnected the air line from the compressor first thing to see if the compressor was working right. It put out a lot of air. I couldn't get above 30 psi when I had the problem. Compressor put out 150 psi immediately. I checked for leaks (none) and the only item left was the check valve. I took it apart and there were broken pieces of plastic inside. I found the good one in the McMaster Carr catalog. Under $30. Done.

Back to TIRES....

The largest tire that BFG makes in the A/T KO style that is E rated is the LT285/75R16/E.

I run 315/75/16. There is NO E rated tire available in the size. That MUST be why SMB gave me D rated tires on my new build. So, I'm stuck with D's unless I want to downsize (who wants that?)

So, Jeffrey, are you saying size matters?

I run 285's, but then again the time the van has seen dirt can be measured in minutes.

Re: Good thing I had both hands on the wheel !

Well, Herb, that explains why your beautiful red van always is so clean!

OK, I do a lot of trails and off-roading. I just visited the Nitto site to look at Terra Grapplers, which I very successfully run on my Land Rover. Again, NO E ratings at my size tire. And, their new Trail Grappler, which looks pretty nice and apparently is only for pimpmobiles, isn't available in ANY 16" sizes. What are they thinking!!?!?

So, it's back to the same tires I've been running, and that's OK with me since they have performed well.

Jeffrey,
You may want to consider the Toyo Open Country Mud Terrains which come in an E: LT315/75R16 127Q E/10 (35X12.50R16) Part #360230. I hear from others that they are a lot quieter than the BFG M/T.

Re: Good thing I had both hands on the wheel !

I'm sort of late getting on this thread but have a (silly?) question. I replaced my D rated BFG's a month ago. They had 35k on them, with lots of tread depth, but were almost 5 years old. I now have E rated BFG's, with the recommended 80 PSI rear, and 60 PSI front. The Van is parked in my garage / woodshop all the time. I noticed that the tires only pick up the sawdust on the center of the tire, about an inch on either side is clean, does that indicate overinflation? And I did notice a dramatically different ride over washboard roads, forest road 250, from Superior MT to Kelly Creek, Idaho, what used to be a 30 mph drive, is now a 10 mph boneshaker.

Re: Good thing I had both hands on the wheel !

Tom,

I would say that the full width of the tread should be contacting the ground. Over-inflation is likely. It also seriously degrades ride comfort. And on washboard, at that pressure, the ride must be unbearable. I would lower the pressure by half or more for washboard surface. You're risking everything from shocks to teeth!
