Neither my old or my new Ipad have a built in GPS, so I use a Bluetooth one that sits on the dash, and it works fine. It may also work on other tablets too but I haven't tested it.

Another vote for the Montana. I have 4 of them and have used them around the world on Van, bike, boat (lake and offshore) and canoe trips. It isn't perfect, but nothing is, and it is by far the best GPS I have ever used. It can be tricky to get setup to your liking (there are multiple interface options) but they are easy to use, have a fast processor and a big, glove-friendly daylight-readable screen.

Also, you can get any type of map you want (marine, street, off-road, too), and often for free.

Love the things.

My van stereo system has a big screen and is Apple CarPlay compatible. I have Gaia GPS on my phone. Gaia has some great map layers and is also Apple CarPlay compatible, so I can use my stereo screen to navigate. We just finished a 2-week trip through National Forests in Wyoming and Colorado and it worked flawlessly.

The only down side I can think of is you have to download the map area onto your phone via wifi ahead of time.
