Grey recirculation valve

My water pump has been surging on and off with the faucet closed. I was worried I broke a line over the winter. However it appears to be the grey valve on the top of the water tank. When I close that valve and switch on the pump a small amount of water is recirculating.

Does anyone know what the purpose of recirculating that water is? Follow up, has anyone had that break/what did you replace it with?

Is this what you are talking about?

For a couple of years I had a minor leak when I was filling up, but last summer the leak started when pump was on and it leaked all over the floor. The pump would cycle on for a half a second every 5 mins due to the loss of pressure from the leak. I got this part from Fieldvan, ($5!!), took about 10 mins to swap out and no leaks since.

Grey recirculation valve

That valve allows the tank to be filled from the water fill on the exterior of the van, one way opens to allow water in, the other way closes the loop for the water to be pressurized and run through the pump to your faucet. It sounds like you might have it in the open position.
Fill the tank and put it into the position that pressurizes the line and runs out the faucet, let it run for a bit to get all the air out, close the faucet and it should hold without the pump cycling, if it does, you might have a crack in the line or a fitting somewhere.

The issue is, when the valve is closed water is still getting past it, recirculating back into the tank. So the pump surges .

I have this memory of a similar problem, and I think if you get the same valve, you can replace the (leaking) insides without removing it....Otherwise, just replace.....The valves were available from Field, Ithis should be the one as previously linked.....https://shop.fieldvan.com/angle-stop...mpt-x-1-2-mpt/

Yup I had the same problem. I found that there is a bit of rubber inside that valve and it had just gotten hard over the many years and wasn’t sealing perfectly and replacing it fixed the surging issue in my van as well.
