Re: How long does your SMB / 6.0 PSD sit between trips?

Our van typically goes into a storage lot mid November or Early December and stays there until April time frame. It also might be left there for 1-2 months over the summer months

Dave,

I think that was the early turbo's. Later ones have been treated to prevent the rust, maybe a material change or plating.

Mine failed early on and the replacement has never been an issue.

Aren't Diesels subject to Cold Stacking ? when left to idle and thus causing the EGR to become clogged . I have been warned of this by several long time Diesel Mechanics and yet others here on the forum have indicated that they let their 6.0 T D idle up to temperature . I am always confused when starting the engine so I alternate every other start and wonder the whole time if I am doing this the correct way .

I don't have any expertise here myself.......but have also heard a very consistent message from the 'experts' (mechanics) I've asked. Their clear advice has been to not let the motor idle too long, especially if cold, and if you 'need' to idle for whatever reason, use the high idle switch.

Re: How long does your SMB / 6.0 PSD sit between trips?

Hi,

Thought I might chip in
I use my Van at worst every 2 weeks.

On the idle to warm or not I think the best way to warm an engine is to drive it, but diesels with turbo you need to be careful not to put the engine under too much strain until warmed up (like any engine actually)... the ignition of the diesel under compression in the chambers gets more efficient as it gets warmer, the oil is thicker and lubes less well (think of the turbo bearings), metal parts haven't dilated to there "operating size"...

So drive softly, and best indicator would be oil temp before you load the engine...

On the other hand (as we have here) in snowy winter conditions I often start the Van and set the heaters on full and then go about clearing the wind shield etc...

So in conclusion it is 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other

Re: How long does your SMB / 6.0 PSD sit between trips?

Our Sporty sits empty for almost four months, November through the end of February in the front driveway. I try to take it on a run up Interstate 15 for twenty or thirty miles every two to three weeks in the winter to keep things unfrozen.

Something of an interesting note is the Edge Platinum controller will not allow a cold engine to be run at full power until it is up to factory spec temperatures and it works in reverse when EGT's are getting toward their peak , and begins a de fueling process until the temperature is back within its normal parameters .
