We have both V10 and 7.3 vans.

V10 is certainly quieter around town and idling. Marginally quieter at cruising speed on the road. The 7.3 is louder at idle and slow speeds, climbing mountain roads. At cruise on the road it is fine for us.

Right now, as we sit here in Sun Valley,ID ---> what is really important, they sound exactly the same when off while we are camping and sleeping!!! Haha!!!!!!

I have a 6.0 Powerstroke, and it is definitely LOUD. But what can you expect, it's basically a cab-over with nothing but a plastic shell (the "dog house") between you and 8 big dinosaur burning pistons. My van already has a foil-lined insulation inside the dog house, but I will definitely be looking in to thread with recommendations for sound damping. I'm thinking of doing a little custom sewing to make a blanket over the dog house, and maybe a dash mat. I've had dash mat's in many other trucks and they make a significant and surprising difference!

Anyone else feel really uncomfortable on a cold early morning when you fire up that diesel and the neighbors are still fast asleep.

It always bothered me with my 6.0 and even my 2001 VW TDI wakes up the Roosters in the neighborhood.

None of my gassers do that...

Definitely gets me when I'm rumbled out of bed by nearby diesel. Stock ones don't usually bother me except those who idle them for forever in the morning, but then there's the straight piped diesel crowd

I had one neighbor when I was working in Seattle recently who made regular late-night convenience store runs in his straight-piped diesel, and drove off at 5am every morning. But the most irritating part was him going WOT out of the RV park. EVERY DAMN TIME!

I try not to camp anywhere there are neighbors. Not because of my diesel, but because I like to get away from people when I'm on vacation.

When I'm at home, nope I don't worry about it. Half of Alberta owns diesel trucks I just fit in with the rest of the crowd here.

I should add that my Sprinter and the Duramax I sometimes drive are nowhere near as loud as the Fords. The Jetta, with 230,000 miles has just gotten louder the last year or so.

I do love diesels and have had many of them.

The original poster's question was, "How loud is diesel in Ford van?"

There is no way around the honest answer...

Clearly, he likes the noise, and wants everyone to know he has a diesel. Does he own a Harley too?
