How loud is diesel in Ford van?

Some yeas ago, an SMB owner was kind enough to show me his SMB diesel van. From inside the van I found the engine to be very loud. Like get in the way of conversation loud. Did that ever get better? Note the engine was not warmed up.

Our 2008 6.0 is loud. It does get slightly quieter when it warms up, but it's still loud. And it's not the exhaust, most of the sound comes from the engine bay.

One thing that makes it louder outside of the van is the fact that the van is lifted due to the 4WD system. I've been next to 6.0's in 2WD vans and trucks and they are a little quieter. 7.3's and 6.4's seem to be quieter than the 6.0, too.

G'day,
I dispute that. 7.3 is definitely louder. I've had 6.0 Ford, 7.3 Ford & Ram 6.7 Cummins. Cummins is so quiet! But 6.0 is fabulous. Did 6 weeks, 11,000miles back in June/July 2015 and 6.0 performed admirably, good economy as well/16.5mpg. You just need to improve sound insulation in engine cover, engine bay & bonnet.
Cheers,

Right, 7.3 is def louder than a 6.0. photographix, while its all relative, but I would check that your doghouse is properly sealed and rubber is in good shape, maybe add some foil lined sound/heat padding or dynamat to the backside, that helped a bunch on our 7.3, I pulled the oem foil heat pad, put on dynamat and then cut a piece of that engine bay foil backed 1/2" padding for heat before replacing the oem shield over everything keeping it all in place with foil tape and adhesive spray, helped a bunch.

I've driven Ledger's 7.3 van recently, which has had the Quietride kit put in the doghouse and front floor. Unbelievably quiet and calm in there. It's kind of amazing to crack a window or open a door with the engine running and see how much noise it's making outside.

No affiliation, but their kit apparently works.

I had a 7.3 that was first unbearably loud, then after a doghouse upgrade, bearably loud. I switched to a v10 last year and it is oh-so pleasant!
