Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Chris,

I try and run 62mph, or the limit if it is lower. In hilly country, I let the speed drop to 50-55 going uphilland the speed goes up to 70 downhill to save fuel. If the road is flat, I use cruise control.

Mike

Mike,
Did you tow your trailer? What does it weigh? That is really exceptional mpg and I'll bet it has a lot to do with having a soft foot.

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Chris, I left the trailer home; it costs about 1 mpg.

From now on I'm following you and doing exactly what you do. You win the best avg. mpg contest hands down. Unless you are lying like most who claim great mpg.

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Not lying, but not many are willing to drive as slowly and to rarely use the brakes like I do.

All the brakes do is convert fuel into heat, so I only use them to prevent an accident or to
stop when required, never just to slow down.

Ditto what Mike just said.

Like the guy last week who wanted to know how to keep the brakes from smoking when coming down a mountain.
It's simple, just don't use 'em. Drive in the proper gear.

I'm getting 13 overall in our rig and got 16.5 on one tank under ideal conditions.

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

I'll be the first to admit I was hoping for better mileage when we bought our diesel van. I track every tank and it has averaged 13 mpg since new but that includes a lot of around town driving. Highway mileage has been improving lately as we approach 30K miles on the rig. Last few tanks on longer trips have returned 17 and 18 mpg driving 70-75 mph up from 14 to 16 mpg previously. I hope the trend continues. I should try to slow down and see how much the mileage can improve but that is really hard to do on Southern California freeways.

Our rig weighs 8,000 lbs empty which is much less than many SMBs, but I don't think weight is a huge factor influencing mpg for these diesel vans. I'm sure the "flying bread box" aerodynamics affect mileage much more.

The other nice thing about going light on the brakes is you don't have to replace pads very often. I didn't replace front pads in my car until 160,000 miles, and my rear pads still have a lot of life at 185,000. Of course, the other part in getting great mileage is to drive slow and with a light foot. My brakes last a long time, but my mileage isn't up to Mike's standards 'cuz I'm having problems with the other part...

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

I (GMC 3500, 6.0 V8 GAS) just completed 2500 mile trip, and got 15MPG on average. I get 17 on highway, and 8-12 on mountain roads.

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Hi:
when we go through Oregon at 55 mph, we get 14.5 mph.
As soon as we go over that we hit 12 to 13 p.m.
