Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Gotta say reading this thread on a rainy day was entertaining. It is mostly about 4X4 but for my 5.8lgas EB 3.73 with about 185K on it, multiple trips down baja, and around the north and northwest.
Worst = 12.2
City = 13+ (and logging offroad stuff)
Hwy = 14.5+ at 63mph (that seems to be a very comfortable steering speed and fuel efficiency)
The Hwy + is for when it is very hot or high altitude driving that is not too mountainous I run 16+mpg. At 70mph mileage dies to ~13. Drafting helps, but is pretty mind numbing.

Baja is mostly not as good due to the up and down twisties and offroad, and often you get 23liters in a 20liter tank . Even with the 15% fudge factor the gas is currently much cheaper....

Still seems to be running consistently given the mileage and no rebuild. Tires have always been on road (currently Hancook 245s).

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

I read somewhere, probably CycleWorld, that the federally-allowed accuracy range on odometers and speedometers is -0.1% to +5.0%, encouraging manufacturers to make gauges that indicate longer distances and higher speeds. Guess which way gauges on service station fuel pumps err. Of course, the 30 gallons you pumped into the fuel tank may be closer to 29 gallons. Maybe it all evens out. The only number you can really know really accurately is the amount spent.

Did you notice a drop in mpg when you added the roof rack. I'm guessing you did. How big of a drop?

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Overall I have been getting about 15.6mpg. This weekend however, we went up into the mountains (Flagstaff, AZ) camping at about 7500ft for 3 days and only got 12.7mpg. This also includes running the motor about 30 min to charge the house battery. Ford 5.4L, 2wd, EB.

Summer 2012 mpg update - we got about 14 mpg on a 1200 mile trip. The A/C was on most of the time, and we spent many hours crawling in low gear over 2-track roads.

We were very pleased that the van never overheated or even got very hot with all the crawling. Ambient temperatures were 70 to 90F.

Re: how many miles per gallon do you get?

Just got back from a run from central Texas to SW Oklahoma (the "Indian Territory" region until 1907. The 1905 proposed state of "Sequoyah" didn't fly with the US Congress, who didn't like the provisions in the drafted state constitution giving Indians citizenship, and both Indians and women the vote. Indian Territory got lumped in with the Oklahoma Territory to form Oklahoma in 1907. But I digress ....).

1000 miles, combination of a bit of small town, a small amount of city (Lawton) but mostly 2 or 4 lane state highway at 60-65 mph.

Daytime highs were 100*-107*F. Gently rolling terrain. Overnight lows were... not. Sure wish I had a penthouse! My roof fan and Endless Breeze fans were very welcome.

16.2 mpg averaged over 4 tanks. (Why 4? I drive on the "top half" of my tank, so refill about every 250-ish miles or so when possible. Makes for a good driver safety break on the longer days.)

This is about the same as I got in April over 3,000 miles in a loop out to the Navajo Reservation, Bryce, Capital Reef, Moab, Santa Fe, and back to Texas. Lots of 75 mph on the Texas highways; going into/with headwind probably balanced out).

Now that I'm thinking about letting Derek put a new top on my van, I wonder how it will impact the mpgs. And I'm also thinking about putting on a front hitch for my MTB.

Cheers,
GreyDawg
