We drove about 1,800 miles this past week through AZ, UT and NV on a loop through some of the natl. parks of the southwest. Lots of long stretches with the cruise set at 62-64mph, but also some long/slow climbs. Avg. MPG for the trip has been 16.3. This is our first long roadtrip with the Scangauge and being able to monitor the engine/tranny vital signs was very handy.

On our first big trip with our SMB last week from Charlotte NC to Key West FL we got 12.5 mpg overall, and 15.25 mpg on the interstate driving at 65 mph with our 5.9L gas V-8 2wd. Of course, we weren't towing anything, and the terrain was pretty flat for the whole trip.
Drove at 65 mph because I didn't want to stress the 12 year old engine too badly the first time out of the shute. Had no problems whatsoever with the engine, and had plenty of passing power when needed. Plenty of power with the pedal to the floor on a couple on-ramps.
Only incident is a clanging noise which sounds like a loose exhaust clamp. I'll check that out as soon as it stops raining around here.

Just got back from a 600 mile exploring trip around middle Baja with a friend who was driving a Ford Expedition (not sure if that was it, but it's the biggest one) with the V-10. About 100 miles was on pavement and the rest nasty dirt with lots of slow driving due to the road conditions. Each time we filled up our tanks, he used at least half again as much fuel as I did. To give the V-10 some credit, he was towing a small Adventure Trailer and I wasn't. But then, I was much heavier then he was. Still can't believe there was that much difference in our two fuel useages.
Also, diesel is much cheaper down here, so it was really great. Happy with the diesel to date.

And I don't care..
ps.
On a long freeway trip, I might get 12mpg.

I usually run 12 MPG overall but since AMSOIL @ 20,000, my "flat" trip to SMB has gone up to 14 now @ 30,000 but speedometer also runs 2 MPH slower. So I'm not good with the math, am I <14 or >14?

To me, that's asking if it's just bad, or really bad. Even though I have a ScanGuage, I have yet to calibrate the fuel usage, and I think I like living in ignorance. Same goes for my Bronco.
A freeway 40mpg on our diesel Passat wagon, now that's another story.

My speedo's a few mph slower than the actual speed (GPS) too. If your speedometer is slower than you’re actual speed, then your odometer would indicate fewer miles than actual. More miles = better miles per gallon. Therefore, I'm thinking that you're slightly > than 14mpg.

Now that this is out there, I can finally ask. I'm getting very poor mileage. I’m in a 2002 V-10, AMSOIL system, Quigly conversion, 95k miles and getting a little over 9mpg in the city. Can anyone think of possible causes other than air filter, tune-up, or fuel mixture? Thanks…

It's hard to define "city". 9 MPG for city doesn't sound too unexpected if your city driving has lots of stop & go -- there's simply a lot of Sportsmobile mass to accelerate each time you stop. I haven't calculated a full tank of city driving mileage myself, but I get about that mileage when off-road trail-driving (lots of stop and go).

WOW.....this is great! Now, from a pure cost standpoint, can anybody come up with a dollar per mile figure for diesel versus V10 factoring in purchase and service expense?
From all of these posts I seem to see an average MPG of 11 on the V10 and 14 on the diesel over all driving types.
I don't know what a routine service costs for either engine or what the frequency is.
I don't know what an average cost for diesel or gas is around the western states. Where I live it's about a .40 cent difference per gallon.
I think a diesel van equipped the same as a V10 costs about $8,000 more.
Is there a "stat" guy out there who can do the math and make some predictions for say 12,000 miles per year?
