So far, I have only used 87 octane regular, but after reading some of the posts, I will experiment with higher octanes. It's only money, right?

It's only a 20¢ spread still, which made a huge difference beating the % when fuel was $1 but now not so much. I keep meaning to try it in my Jeep.

the average mpg for the 6,200 miles on my '07 SMB is 13.0. I generally don't drive over 65 mph. In a situation where I can leave it on cruise control most of the time (hwy 95 to Death Valley) I get 15+ mpg. On a recent trip to N. Calif. I got 11 mpg. The most I paid on the trip was $3.96/gal in Willits on 101, same price in Eureka.

Just finished our "Maiden Voyage" 3300 miles. 300 miles of dirt road. 20 miles of 4wd. 200 miles Freeway. Sea level to 12k ft. Best mpg, 13, worst,10, average, 11.4. Used 97 octane to test that theory. Not sure if the higher octane made any difference accept to power in the mountains.
Also consumed 6 liters of "Black Box Merlot" (while parked)! This did not seem to affect my mileage. Only saw 2 other SMBs.

I'm averaging around 16 mpg overall on the 2006 diesel, with a low of 13 while four-wheeling and a high of 17.8 on the interstate crusing at 60-65 mph. The mpg is going up slowly and the Sporty is at 18,000 miles after two years. It may be the Amsoil diesel additive that I'm using though too.

I think the quality of Black Box wines have gone down over the last couple of years. Either that or my taste has gotten too rich.

I won't drink Black Box wines, but I am getting about 18 MPG when I add it to my diesel.

Seriously, though. I found that my mileage went up using the Amsoil additive, too (as mentioned in an earlier post). I never got up to 16+ though. Of course, I had rack and cargo box on top (bikes inside) and was going 70+ MPH. I wonder if no accesories on top and 60-65 MPH would have gotten me there.

I'm using the Amsoil diesel additive too. Seems to have helped my MPG a bit. I'm averaging about 16-16.5 on longer trips, mostly back and forth to Mammoth, cruising between 60-65. Net altitude gain makes a big difference so I get far better MPG coming home that driving up there.

16-16.5 on road (less on 4WD). 2002 diesel 4x4 EB, no additives, nothing on the roof (an empty rack we are dithering about taking down).

OK, we just finished a 3,200 mile trip from Indy to Colorado and back. I ran premium gas all the way just to see what it would do. The only problem is, I also changed oil before we left and switched to Mobil 1 from the factory oil. Also, the vehicle is really just getting broken in.

Having said all of that, we averaged 11.76 for the first 8,000 miles on the vehicle using regular gas. On the last trip, we averaged 12.13 using premium fuel, for an improvement of about 3%. How much of an improvement would the Mobil 1 alone have been? I have read 1 to 2% somewhere. How much for the vehicle being broken in? Also, premium is at least 5% more to buy, so I think we will switch back to regular.

One other thing, I installed the ScanGuage before the last trip, so I may have used a little better driving habits. It's kind of scary seeing 5mpg going uphills, etc. If you pop the transmission into N going downhill though, you can easily get over 100mpg.

Just an update I've been running premium in my Jeep. Keeping in mind that I only ran one full tank of 85 with the new lift and tires, I really don't see any improvement in the MPG. However I'm underpowered with the new setup and I feel like there is a little more power from the 93, so I've been sticking with it.

Oh and it drives me crazy that it's a shared nozzle. In the long run it probably doesn't matter, but I'm always getting a hose length of 85 at the cost of 93 and then leaving a hose full of 93 for the next person who will likely pay for 85.
