Insurance
I'm getting close to buying a SMB and was wondering what a good insurance company was to insure one of these things. My insurance company gave me a quote for a base model ford with no options. When I mentioned that it had been converted into a Camper they informed me that they do not insure RV's. Anybody have any ideas?

Progressive Insurance. They are familiar with the Sportsmobiles and we're paying $588 / year. Nobody else seemed to know what an SMB was. Good Luck!

I had a similar experience and ended up with Progressive. After many confusing conversations with other companies, I was delighted to find Progressive has "Sportsmobile" listed in their computer system.
I pay $433 / YEAR for $500/$250/$100K liabability and $72K collision/comp.

As Greg mentioned Nationa Interstate also knows SMBs. I started with Progressive and canceled as they required a built in toilet. A Porta Potti wouldn't cut it with them and seems to with National. Whatever....

I had a tough time finding insurance for our SMB, especially since it is my primary (every day) vehicle. It was even more difficult to find it at a relatively reasonable price. I ended up with AAA insurance and it wasn't a problem to insure it for the present value of the SMB. It is insured for the exact amount on the invoice from SMB Fresno.

Initially went with Farmers and it was an uphill battle to get it insured for more than a E350 chassis. Switched to Progressive too... now all my auto policies are Progressive.

I would go through all the archives on this site because there are some differences from state to state and agent to agent. Make sure they will actually come through when you need it. I had a hard time and got the run around when looking. I even got different answers when I called the same company back. There seems to be issues with several companies about the portable john and other items. What good is full coverage if they pull a rabbit out of their hat and say "sorry" you don't qualify. I have GMAC and so far so good but I never have had to try to get back a 115K vehicle that got totaled out. GMAC through Good Sam seems kind of high priced. There is a good thread on the SMB owners group about someone who totaled their rig. You can read about my troubles here.

Good luck on your choice.
