Re: Is it possible...2 kids, 2 adults, 2 years in a SMB?

Ooh...earthroamer porn! Saw one, not this big honker, smaller version in Moab, didn't have time to stop, but I did go to their headquarters, not to far away from me to check them out a while back, another one that is just beginning to make its way here through a dealer network is tiger, the Bengal model is pretty nice. Yes, it does all depend on what kind of travel and $$ you want/have to spend, is 4WD needed, boondocking vs. RV parks, power needs, solar, self contained.....

Re: Is it possible...2 kids, 2 adults, 2 years in a SMB?

I'm think - Dr. Paskowitz!

After marrying his third wife, Juliette, Paskowitz and his new bride began a period of roughly 25 years of a transient bohemian lifestyle on the road. The couple produced nine children, and the entire family lived and traveled together in a succession of used camper vans. Paskowitz's personal philosophy about education and money and healthy lifestyle was imposed on his family.

If you haven't seen the movie Surfwise you need to.

Re: Is it possible...2 kids, 2 adults, 2 years in a SMB?

Having a family of 4, 2 kids(2 and 4) I can tell you the RB-50 type layout is tight for prolonged travel. At this point, I consider prolonged anything over 3-4 days, hopefully that will change as they get older but maybe not. Inclement weather inside the van can be very challenging times...

Think cabin fever when it rains, cold, snow for a couple of days. Lived in a VW van for about a year. When it was miserable outside it was hard to stay sane.

For a test you could see if you could rent a small camper go someplace with bad weather and stay for a week or two. You may be able to deal with it but the other members may go nuts.

It sounds like a great adventure. Have fun.

I always loved the highly (or lowly) exposed rear disk brakes on these ERs. Looks like it will go anywhere... that it will fit.

I agree. It ain't always pretty, but you'll get a quick education on living w/family in a camper.

Re: Is it possible...2 kids, 2 adults, 2 years in a SMB?

Thanks for all the great insight. We'll definitely be spending the majority of time is sunny/warm climates, so outdoor living space will help to expand our footprint. Also, I think we will try to break up the trip with several month-long house/casita rentals along the way and of course visiting friends and family too.

We're definitely not the paved road and RV campground type. Obviously there will be plenty of highway miles and campgrounds along the way, but when we have the opportunity to get into the back country or onto a beach I hope to have a vehicle that allows us to do it.

As for the 5th wheel option, they sure are beautiful and comfortable, but I could never get one into the spots on Baja where we love to stay and play.

Thanks for the info regarding the Chinook. I'm found a few near me and will definitely check them out for layout/space. Of course finding a 4x4 version especially a diesel will take some luck.

There are several Chinooks for sale, some 4x4, one 2wd diesel:

Several shops could make the diesel one 4x4.
