Is this a record? 1,045 miles...

Well, I've always been a Chevy guy and now 1,045 miles into my first F.ound O.n R.oad D.ead and shes on a tow truck.

Was up in Tahoe this last weekend (100" of snow in 60 hours) and used both lockers and low range in a few situations. (getting through a 5 foot snow drift) Everything was fine including the 3 hour drive home. Then I backed her into the garage and heard some metallic clicking...hmmmm that doesnt sound too good...I'll unload, clean her up in the morning, and take to dealer.

Wake up, pull out of garage, clank click clank....wow that sounds worse now. Clean her up and drive 50 yards and ABS, TCS off, and car out of control light all come on and it sounds like I'm dragging a chain off my rear end. SWEET!!!!!!

Currently at Ford dealer, don't know if its a Ford issue or SMBW issue, soon to find out. Keep you guys posted.

Sorry to hear about your problem!

Sounds like a problem with the rear diff, but I'm not aware of how integrated the diff is into the ABS and other idiot lights and sensors.

Stock Ford rear axle, modified with locker, or Dynatrac?

Not that it's much consolation but even on the back of a tow truck, that's a nice looking van.

just the locker mod...can these things bust loose in the diff? doesn't seem very "heavy duty" if so.

Thanks WVvan!

!
They can be set up wrong, overtorqued, undertightened, defective manufacturing. None of what you did should have broken anything, especially since you drove 3 hours home.

Would the van still move in 2wd drive? Reverse?

If the locker or anything in the diff grenaded, I would insist on everything being replaced. Once those parts get damaged or dinged, even if they still work they're weaker.

It is possible to grenade a rear end, locker or axle if you have a locker engaged on dry pavement and turn sharp. Any chance the locker was still on?

Nice ride. Not to sound paranoia on top of your current woes but ... you did kinda empty out the van of "easily" taken items right?

As you may remember someone had their SMB at the Ford dealership and it wasn't parked inside. You can kinda figure out what happened when it was left outside ...

Just saying ...

No, this all happened 175 miles AFTER any 4x4, or lockers were engaged. And it sure as hell wasn't dry in Tahoe these last few days. Legitimate question though.

The service advisor is of course dancing around telling me the real diagnosis right now because they're 'discussing' with SMBW whose fault this is. Let the games begin....as long as it gets fixed, that's all I care.

Great common sense that I didn't use, I'm going down to grab it all now.

Re: Is this a record? 1,045 miles...

What would cause an idiot light to come on with a diff problem??? I would think transmission before rear end. But not that I would think it would cause such a problem, are you saying that you put the pedal to the metal and drove a brand new vehicle up the hill to Tahoe? I took the time to break everything in...even the differentials. Changed fluids at 1000 mi. Maybe I over reacted because with my work vehicles we usually just drive them on the light side for a few hundred miles then treat them as broke in.

Here is what I did:
a. Drive vehicle easily, no heavy shock loads! Keep vehicles speed under 60 mph for approximately 15-20 miles. I kept the speed around 45 and took the backroads home

b. Stop vehicle and allow the differentials to sit for 1 1/2 hours to cool. Because I was driving in cold wet weather, I just pulled over for a big orange or two

c. Repeat this exact procedure twice. Actually I reapeated this several times

d. For the next 200 miles of operation, drive gently, without any heavy loads. A good long cruz with several big orange stops

e. If trailer towing is intended, an additional cycle of 200 to 300 miles break-in is required without the trailer. To properly break-in a new gear set, a minimum of 500 miles of driving is essential before constant towing. I kept on flat land because of how heavy the van was and avoided the mountains.

Well I probably over reacted...but it was fun

Hope your problem is something simple and you get back on the road without any issues.
Good Luck
Dave
