Knocking sound in driver pillar

I have a 2014 E150 with a Sportmobile top installed in 2021. After driving across country a few times, a knock developed above the pillar behind the drivers side. It sounds like a metal to metal knock and happens on now the slightest road bumps. I pulled up the upholstered section above the spring and couldn’t find a place where metal could touch. I haven’t dug completely over the pillar because that part is glued in and can’t see in there.

Any experience with this? Perhaps the driver side lift spring shifts and bangs in the channel and resonates to sound like it’s just above the driver? Should I stuff some closed cell pad next to lift spring. Drives me nuts.

The channel that the extension springs sit in should be lined with something under the springs.....usually upholstery fabric to keep the noise down. If the fabric is not glued down well sometimes when lifting and lowering the top the spring scrapes the fabric away/bunches it up......so look closely at that.

Also if the chains have been tightened the extra loose links need to be zip tied to the chain to keep them from clacking as well.

I imagine the newer tops have different hold-down straps/hooks but the older J-hook style hold-downs can rattle like crazy when latched. I inserted large rubber grommets into the holes into the hold down brackets that the J hooks latch to to silence them.

I will look closer at that spring. I sure didn’t see anything located under that spring. I’ll get something under that and report back. Makes sense that it could resonate down the metal channel to make it sound like it’s in the pillar. Thanks!
