Re: Lightning safety in a plastic top SMB

That's sad. Wonder if it could have been prevented with better choices or lightning safety awareness?

Well, perhaps. Not hiking above treeline, not hiking in the PM while cloudy, etc. But who among us hasn't delayed a bit in turning around? Sometimes you're just unlucky.

And Jeffrey, as someone who's spent a lot of time in Tucson with relatives it's the same thing. Lots of lightning, but it rarely hits anyone. And you won't necessarily be the tallest object, maybe some mesquite will be. Here's some info, with a couple of interesting pictures:

Seems to hit on the edge of roofs, so the "skin effect" would probably still send it down the sides.

Some boats I've seen have had lightning protection built in, since they're fiberglass. Maybe something like that would help you.

Thanks, Rob. I added that to my folder of safety sites.

There's always risk. I'll just beware or drive the hell away fast.

Re: Lightning safety in a plastic top SMB

We were in Rocky Mountain NP on Saturday afternoon, heading west toward Rainbow Curve when 2 ambulances came down the mountain headed for Estes Park. We had heard about Friday's lightning death, and wondered if the same thing had happened. Later, we found out that we were unfortunately correct.

The weather on Saturday turned on a dime at our location. All morning was sunny and beautiful, then the clouds developed and dropped below about 10,000 feet, and the thunder could be heard everywhere. All of this took only about 15-20 minutes. No wonder the hikers got caught out.

Can a faraday cage have

a fiberglass top?

We can hope, but I think not...

Very interested, but I was VERY dissapointed not to see any pics of lighting in that area, and then even worse, I saw this statement:

"The Lightning Field is protected by copyright. Photography of the sculpture and the cabin is not permitted"
