hey 2horsegarage -
if you are a DIY kind of guy and have lots of time then that is one approach..... because it will take a long time. And, do you want 4 wheel drive? Can you do that yourself? Can you lift it yourself?
So it really depends on what you want ....
If you can swing it I recommend buying a used SMB - as you know this site and Sportsmobile.com constantly list inventory for sale.
Eventually all kinds of SMBs come across for sale ... for example, you might find Cargo RB with just a 4x4 package and/or maybe a PH ... you could buy cheaper than new and DIY the rest.
I looked to buy used for months because you can save a lot of money that way and there are plenty of later models out there. IF you want diesel engine you will have a lot of choices if you are willing to wait for what you want. I wanted the V10 gas engine so my choices were very limited and eventually I bought new and went that route - RB-50 plan, 4x4, etc.
It is OK driving around town as a daily driver but it is BIG and sucks fuel when in town .... so IMO you don't want to drive it daily IF you can help it.
But .... if you like the outdoors, driving to anywhere and camping, hiking, etc. you won't regret the SMB .... but there is a lot to learn about an RV and all it's systems, and the SMB is a class B RV if you upfit it like that ... so that is somehting you have to become smart on ....
However, getting the 4x4 package is, to me, what is so great about the SMB because it will go almost anywhere
add to that an electric PH and it's fantastic!!
