Mounting a roof rack to the penthouse top

I have a low profile roof rack that I want to install on my PH top.

Should I drill through the roof and put a nut on the inside or can I screw the rails directly to the plywood ridges?

Are there any suggestions as to what kind of screw or well nut I should use?

Anyone know how thick the plywood strips on the PH roof are?

Check this thread for ideas...

If you decide to go with the rails, be sure to install them in a way that the holes you drill are "outside" of the canvas. That way if the holes leak for any reason, it wont leak to the interior.

Re: Mounting a roof rack to the penthouse top

I just got all set to install a rack on mine, for a large thule cargo box. That's about 57 lbs of weight, so I put two barbell weights on the top to try it out. Not only was it harder to put up, I didn't like the wobbliness of the top.

I took the wrights down and laid the cargo box and bars up on top, and still did not like the way things felt up there.

I know that there are threads about tightening the PH springs to make raising the top easier, but in the end I decided it was not worth it. Taking the bars and raingutter mounts and such back to REI.
