There's a couple of follow up stories to this original one and apparently the guy & his dog died using a different type of heater, one that does produce carbon monoxide, not the Mr. Buddy shown it the photo. Who knows what the real story is. That being said, this certainly wouldn't be the first time a news agency got their story wrong or used the wrong photo.

Before I got my diesel furnace I used a Mr. Buddy Heater. I always ensured it was well ventilated, my maxx fan opened on vent mode and I would have a window popped out. Of course it was a no brainer that I made sure my van was equipped with a propane/natural gas/c02 detector as well.

It's sad that these things happen when they are easily preventable.

My understanding is any heater can produce CO if the oxygen level in the room drops enough.

CO detectors are pretty cheap these days. Every camper should probably have one!

I just installed new CO and Propane detectors in my new to me SMB. (the old ones had expired around 2009, and had the fuse pulled no doubt due to them always alarming)The best deal I found was directly from the Sportsmobile store, (thanks for the recommendation REF), even better than Amazon, but... they seem to have a five year life span and the ones I got were already one year old, so it's worth checking the expiration date prior to purchase. As I remember, I paid just under $100 for both, including shipping, that's cheap insurance.
