We've got one of the black folding steps also, can get them almost anywhere, camping world has them.
Yup, thats what we use. Its handy and you can use it side and rear. I use it to assist loading motorcycles too.
The more crap you add on the more things there are to fail, not to mention hanging steps off of a 4x.
But... I know the 4x4 van is a thing of excess!

I had one of the foldable plastic step stools and cracked it while using it on uneven ground. Stepped up (pun intended) and got an aluminum one that's stout.

I think they stopped making these steps and would love to find them again. I look at all camping worlds when I see one and have time. They are the right height and store pretty good.

Most the time the Copilot is Now Sophie dog the noise maker.
It works nice with our hoop step to get into/out of Sherman (32" tires, 4" lift). Very light weight and it doubles as a shower platform. I fold ours up and store it on the floor of the shower next to the porta pot.
