Is that to the face the tire mounts or the back of the triangle piece? It has been a while since I have seen the older mount. If you have some pics, that would be great!

5.5" from the face where the wheel rests against (triangle piece) to the tube that the tire rests against.

I had an Aluminess Swing Arm Tire Mount for My sprinter and could not get it stable... ended up scrapping it for a Custom Bumper/ladder/tire mount from Trispeed Motor works in Nashville. Much better system

That sounds like a great idea and the voice of an experienced traveler.

I just got off the phone with Aluminess. On the new mount design with the two sliding angles that are u-bolted to the square tube swingarm, the design intent is that every time you use it you need to re-adjust the height so that the tire sits in the two horizontal bars. I brought up my concern with the visible flexing between the two pieces of angle and they said that in their testing as long as it is resting on the two horizontal bars, and that there will be a little wobble of the tire but it should not be a concern even if the sidewall isn't against the swingarm.

Of note is that they said that the old style mount with the welded mount and bolt on triangular adapter on the round tube swingarm had issues with the mount breaking off when people were using "larger" tires, although I didn't think to ask them to qualify what larger meant. I hadn't ever heard of anybody having that issue, so was surprised by that.

I must say Aluminess gets major points for actually making effort to call me after I e-mailed them, and even making several attempts to get through. Find that so rarely these days!

That said, I still find it to be a terribly irritating design to have it that wobbly and to have to fiddle with it so much at each use, especially when you're already pissed about having a flat. In the short term have chopped an inch off of each of the angles and added two additional bolts to hold them together. So now my sidewall is in contact with the swingarm, but the tire is not on the horizontal supports. There is no wobble and everything seems solid, but time will tell if that was a mistake and something breaks. Still need to do something about that silly moveable lug bolt that always falls out and forces me to look like I'm humping my tire to get a wrench on both sides of it...
