Newbie Here, with some build pics...

What's up everybody,
Got my smb 4x4 being built right now in Fresno. Been cruisin this site for thoughts, lots of great stuff and hopefully I can learn and contribute over the upcoming years. Here are some build pics to enjoy. You'll see 'road kill' being applied, insulation, awning window installled, attic fan cutout, and outside pic.

I'm starting off the interior real simple, just a 75" dinette 'L' going in back, a swivel passenger seat and thats it. I figured I can DIY as I see fit as I figure out things I want. No PH yet either...maybe in a few years (saves $ for now). Only need to sleep 1 or 2 + dog max on 2-4 day trips to the snow or dirt bike riding. No water or propane, I'm a big fan of small charcoal grills, small portable gas burners, and jerry cans for water. On the other side, I am going with a pretty full blown 4x4 package, I want to get anywhere!

Anyways, I'll leave it at that for now I'm sure lots more to come. Happy trails!

p.s. any other newcomers out there? I'm hoping to pick up soon (2-4 weeks), and can take pics of your build for you...or vice versa!

Re: Newbie Here, with some build pics...

That was my question, what's road kill? First, I thought it was some esoteric sticker, then I began to think it's some sound dampening stuff. My bet would be on the latter.

Welcome from another home builder. I, too, am without propane at the moment and water, although I own a propex and a tank, just not sure I am going to install them.

Anyway, glad you are on board. I went overboard with sound dampening and insulation, but it made - and continues to make - me happy, just knowing those redundant layers of goo and fluff, topped with foil and more foil tape, coat the inside of my van.

What kind of 4x4 system are you having them install, aside from the standard? Any lockers, etc.?

Goblue, my unit is just getting underway. Scheduled completion is mid April. I'll probably be back down there for a "fix" in 2 or 3 weeks. Yours should be getting close. Will be happy to check in for you when I head down.

All the best,

D

Is it really that beautiful blue? It looks black in one picture. I wanted blue but it was not available as a Ford color.

Yup, road kill is a sound dampener much like dynamat (but a little cheaper). I had them put it on the doors, floor, panels, and engine cover. Probably would have minimized more wind noise had I put it on the roof, but knowing I will put a PH in at some point I didn't want to waste the $$. I want to go pretty big with a stereo/video system in the future too so I don't want it to be a rattle bucket.

Angel, yes its the dark blue, had to pay a tiny extra (only $112), I know its tough to keep clean but I love the color...and with the aluminess bumpers, black front grill, and black wheels I think its gunna look sweet!

dmiloh, would love some pics from you when you go down there!

Just got word today that I'm looking at the end of February for pick up, van is going on 4x4 rack soon! and 2 more updated pics from Jonathan.

I guess I'm pretty standard on 4x4 options but I am adding a front locker (lim slip in back has always worked out fine for me), the warn winch, and extreme air magnum. Going to be adding rock sliders with help from a friend after pick up.

Do you happen to know the R rating for the Certain Teed insulation in your van? And is the standard stuff SMB West puts in all their van builds? I never got photos of that step in my van build and so I don't know what I got behind the walls...
