Jage,
when we were building our SMB, I needed to have a way to get my 87 year old mother into the van but not with a wheel chair lift. Linda on this site answered my question with a tip to go to startrackslifts.com. I wound up buying their running board lift. It's about a foot wide spanning the length of the passenger side and lowers to the ground and then up to the level of the van's entry powered by a remote. You can lower it to whatever height you want while parked and leave it there to make a great step. Fully raised, it is out of the way. It has a safety mechanism which raises it when the ignition is turned on so you can't drive away with it lowered.
John Kalmbach helped us get it from the manufacturer in Indiana and oversaw the installation which had some complications, but he got everything ironed out.
It was pricey but works wonderfully. Come the hurricane, my mom will be able to travel without worry. I don't have a camera, but startrackslifts web site has videos and photos showing them on 4x4 vans. This month I asked SMB Austin if they thought it would keep me from off roading, they said I'd be fine, it's nowhere near the lowest point of my van.
