Penthouse Top Insulation

I have a 2003 Ford RB50 with a penthouse top. We sleep in the penthouse except for when there are high winds or the low temperature is below 30 degrees. In October we were in Montana and it was getting cold. I remember reading about Reflectix in the Forum. I stopped at the Lowes in Bozeman and bought a 24 inch by 25 foot roll of Reflectix for $29. Turns out that the circumference of the penthouse is about 25 feet. I cut the insulation in two pieces. The insulation fits perfectly between the struts and the curtains keep it in place.

The Reflectix keeps out the wind, light, and makes it 10 degrees warmer. The only downside is the penthouse canvas is damp in the morning and I need to find a place to store the rolls of Reflectix

The best $29 purchase I've made for my sportsmobile.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

Fold it longways down the bed. I store both my PH pieces on the front section of the PH bed, running front to back so that there are only a few inches of overlap in the middle. If you don't have downstairs pieces (Reflectix cut to windows) and you leave the bed down usually, you can go all the way back on the bed to make it less tall of a stack (3 layers each side instead of 4-5?), just be sure not to cover the J hook hole. I can fit all my upstairs and downstairs pieces, including the windshield inbetween the PH bed and top... mine is an EB though, and I can never figure which beds are different so you may have to play with it some.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

I was not able to fit all that in my RB. Also I bought the 4 foot wide roll and cut it to fit snugly. There is more overlap though when storing.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

Cold in Montana in October? Not usually. But what do I know; I spent half the month in southern Utah and came back to find out that the low temp had set a new record of 6 degrees F above zero.

Good idea with the Reflectix!

Do you know if the aluminum leaves black marks on the canvas after using it for a while?

The material I've seen has a plastic coating over the aluminum.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

I also have been using the stuff from Lowes for about two years, and yes it does leave black marks on everything it rubs on. We use Fantastic to clean the marks. I am looking for something to replace it.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

Thanks for answering my question. I think I will just use it on the windows.

Re: Penthouse Top Insulation

We are on the road and have had some cool (27F) nights that have required that we insulate the penthouse top or keep the roof down and sleep down below. In our dinning area we have two Therm-a-rest mattresses that we normally use for seating. We un-clipped the clips that shape them into seats and stuffed one one each side of the penthouse between the canvas and the x-bars. The Therm-a-rest Base Camps measure 1.75" x 25" x 75". They fit real nice on top an makes so we don't mind having our backs go against the penthouse sides in the middle of the 27F night.
